Baltimore's Best Stuff For Infants/Babies

Parents who want a break from the big chain children's clothing stores or need help finding an independent bookstore for the youngest would-be readers, will be pleased to know that Baltimore has a number of unique options. Below is just a soupcon of the available options, but well worth noting. -- Mary Medland

Pied Piper

32 Village Square
Baltimore, MD 21210

Located in the Village of Cross Keys, Pied Piper boasts that it has been a one-stop shopping destination for parents of children from infants through age 14 for the past 46 years. When it comes to infants, Pied Piper carries hooded towels, christening outfits, take-me-home outfits, sweaters and diaper bags. And that is just for starters. Especially popular is the store's Moses Basket, which makes it easy for busy parents to move a sleeping infant from one room to another without disturbing him. The store also carries imported items from Italy and France that won't be found elsewhere. And, while it is a hop, skip and a jump from some of the toniest neighborhoods in Baltimore, Pied Piper prides itself on carrying items from all price points, whether that is $20 to $200. Hours: Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.

It's never too early to start children on the path toward a lifetime love for reading, and - for more than 30 years - the Children's Bookstore in Baltimore has been making that possible. Along with classic children's titles, including those in board-book form, the store features the best in contemporary stories and illustration. Parents will be able to find many stuffed toys and Folkmanis puppets, as well as storytelling tapes, music and CDs. Author signings are popular along with other store and seasonal events, such as a Halloween party. Owner JoAnn Fruchtman has a devoted staff that cares about getting the right book to the right child at the right time. Hours: Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The French have a reputation for being sleek and stylish when it comes to clothing, and Belle Bambini has everything for children from birth to age 16 to do just the same. And, while these French clothes - think Lili Gaufrette and Three Pommes - are well made, they won't necessarily blow your budget; Belle Bambini has a number of items that won't clean out your wallet. If it's a special occasion - think holy days, holidays and baby gifts - this is the place to head. And, as a boutique, Bell Bambini has clothing that you won't find elsewhere. Hours: Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
