Academy Expels 7 Over Illicit Substance Policy
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The U.S. Naval Academy has expelled seven midshipmen for violating the academy's illicit substance abuse policy.
Cmdr. Joe Carpenter, a Naval Academy spokesman, says an investigation is ongoing. The midshipmen were expelled as of Jan. 20 for using "Spice," a drug that is similar to marijuana. It is considered a banned substance by the Defense Department and the Navy.
An investigation began after allegations were brought to academy leadership by other students after the fall semester began.
