Maryland Crews Work To Clear Snow

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- With another wintry mix coating the streets, there are still lots of concerns about snow removal.

There's a lot of work to be done on side streets. It's going to be sunny Thursday and temperatures are above freezing.

Many residents don't have electricity. There are many customers without service throughout Maryland.

"The largest group is in Anne Arundel County, followed by Baltimore County then Baltimore City," said Rob Gould, BGE. "We have whole trees and limbs down. We have wires down now. We had 300 reports of wires down and that was as of midnight. That's a real concern for us."

The driving conditions were so bad Wednesday night that trucks could not respond to the calls during the storm.

Kelly McPherson reports a gas station on Northern Parkway became the "survivor's club." People were stranded near the gas station by I-83 for several hours. Then, they finally got off and collected at the gas station. People were stranded in the cold weather and only had access to the gas in their tank.

For more than six hours Wednesday afternoon, I-83 North was jammed with cars inching forward.

"I was stuck on 83 since 6 p.m. I finally made it up here. That's just crazy. Where is the city? They run out of money? What's the deal?" said one frustrated driver.

This was the first chance for drivers to leave the JFX. If a car couldn't come in, some filled up fluid bottles and headed back to their cars.

"I live in Pennsylvania. I was stuck for three hours and they directed us off. I've been here ever since. I can't go anywhere," said another driver.

Drivers had to stay in one location until the streets were cleared.

"We've been here hours," said some drivers.

Abandoned cars will be towed so the plows can clear the road.

Andrea Fujii reports Maryland counties were affected, as well.

It will take 24 hours for Baltimore County to clear all of the roads because they're dealing with the downed wires and trees, as well as the cars before they can even plow.

If you ventured out during the storm, chances are you had problems on the road.

"Even trucks had problems. I think maybe even a plow had problems," said a driver.

The JFX was shut down due to accidents.

"It's bad all over, you know? One area's as bad as the next," said another driver.

The storm hit BWI hard. A large number of flights were canceled. Some were caused by the storms here and weather problems in other states. Plows couldn't keep up with the storm.

Also, rain earlier in the afternoon had washed away any pre-treatment that was done.
