Snow Day Led Many Students To School Board Hill For Fun

BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. (WJZ)--A snow day plus an inner tube equals hours of fun. It's a simple equation that many children can solve.

Gigi Barnett reports fun in the snow begins and ends at one local school district's headquarters.

School is out, and snow fun is in.

The hill at Baltimore County's Schools Board headquarters was named one of the top spots for sledding.

"I needed to get them out of the house because they were jumping on the couches," said Cathy Petersen, parent.

While some kids could win an amateur competition, others looked like winter Olympic hopefuls.

"I'm too scared of all of the jumps," said a couple of friends. "We just go down really fast."

Don't think this hill beckons children only. Grown-ups are on board, too.

"This is very good for them. Good energy spent and the outdoors, just talking with children they don't see, new faces. It's great for everyone," said Rene Simard, parent

The hill is a place where friends don't let friends sled alone.

"I got here early," said third-grader Julia Davis.

Julia brought her big sister to the hill, but left her brother at home.

"He already shoveled, like, four driveways. So, I guess he's sick of snow, maybe," she said.

Before the snow day ends and school begins, there's time for another round.

Under federal law, students are required to spend at least 180 days in class.
