Mother Pickets Md. Police Office Over 16 Slayings

LANHAM, Md. (AP) -- The mother of a University of Maryland student killed during a string of homicides last month is picketing with students outside the Prince George's County police headquarters.

Karen DeSha of Bel Air says the county isn't safe. She says she can't do anything more for her son, Justin DeSha-Overcash, but she wants to bring awareness about the 16 people killed.

Picketers held signs Saturday for each of the 16 homicide victims with their names, ages and the days they died.

Police say DeSha-Overcash was shot during an attempted robbery at his home where investigators also found marijuana.

DeSha says she wants county residents to come together and treat each other like human beings. She says one officer threatened to arrest her for picketing, but a corporal later apologized.
