BLOG: Gary Williams Should Be In The Hall Of Fame
Gary Williams passed John Wooden on the all-time list for wins on Wednesday night with 665. That's 22nd overall. The Basketball Hall of Fame does not wait until a coach retires, like football or baseball would do, to elect coaches. Coach K is in, so are Roy Williams, Jim Boeheim and Jim Calhoun. Gary Williams is a Hall of Famer. He resuscitated a Maryland program when it was very iffy if that could be done. He turned the program into a perennial NCAA tournament team, and a national champ. People are too quick to try and compare Maryland to Duke and Carolina. It's not fair. Compare Maryland to the other ACC programs, and no one over the last 20 years can hold Gary's jock. There may not be a sense of immediacy, nor does there need to be, but when all is said and done, Gary should be inducted in the Hall.
