Tuesday's Snow Day Pushes Some School Systems Over The Edge

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Students love a snow day, but some school systems have already exceeded their number of snow days.

Jessica Kartalija explains some schools are scrambling to make up the missed time.

More snow and less school.

"I'm really happy about the school closure because I completely forgot to practice my recorder and I have recorder class," said one student.

At the Baltimore County Board of Education, there's more sledding than schooling fun for now.

"An awesome day, but at the end of the school season when they have to go an extra day, they are not going to want to do it then," said one parent.

"My teachers have been warning us not to be excited because we have already used our snow days," said a student.

Anne Arundel County Schools have just one day left.  Baltimore City's out of days, Baltimore County has one day left, Carroll County has two to make up, Harford County has three days left and Howard County has one.  Students in Maryland are required to be in school 180 days a year.  If they exceed the number of alloted snow days, the superintendent of each school can submit a request to the state Board of Education.  It's up to them to decide if any of those days will be waived.

"No, I'm not thinking about that.  Just thinking about snowboarding and having fun," said a student.

But that could mean a shorter spring break or a longer school day in some school districts. So what's a kid to do?

"I'm just going to have to deal with it.  It's not going to hurt me too much," said a student.

For most schools in Maryland, the last day June 17.  That won't be officially determined until mid-March, when the threat of snowstorms die down.

Last year, some school districts had students attend class on President's Day.  Others shortened spring break.
