Official: Suspicious Package Was Empty Briefcase

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Fire officials say a suspicious package found near the Anne Arundel County health department building was just a briefcase someone may have tried to throw away.

County fire department Division Chief Capt. Michael Cox says the package was found around 8:15 a.m. Monday by a trash bin outside the building on Harry S. Truman Parkway. He says members of the bomb squads for Annapolis' fire department and the state fire marshal's office x-rayed the briefcase to make sure it was empty before they pried it open.

Cox says the trash bin was locked so perhaps someone trying to throw away the briefcase just placed it next to the bin.
