Last Day For Maryland General Assembly

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland lawmakers will be debating a 50 percent increase in the alcohol sales tax and how to subsidize troubled horse racing tracks, as the General Assembly pushes toward adjournment.

There's also plenty of fine tuning to do Monday on measures that have passed both chambers with different provisions, including a bill that would allow illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition if they meet certain requirements.

One of the highest-profile measures still before lawmakers would raise the alcohol sales tax from 6 percent to 9 percent. The House of Delegates changed the legislation Saturday to implement the increase all at once, instead of over three years. As they do every year, lawmakers are expected to work up to midnight scrounging to pass those measures and others before the session closes.
