Celeb Chef Voltaggio Puts Name On Md.-Made Beer

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- Celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio is teaming up with Flying Dog Brewery to create a signature beer.

The Frederick-based "Top Chef" finalist and the local brewing company announced their new Backyard Ale on Tuesday.

The label features a portrait of Voltaggio by gonzo artist Ralph Steadman. Steadman's work adorns all the company's products.

Voltaggio says the beer is made to be enjoyed with smoked and barbecued foods. It's made with malted barley that's been smoked over a cherry wood fire.

Voltaggio is co-owner of the Volt restaurant in downtown Frederick. He was a finalist on the 2009 season of the Bravo network's "Top Chef" program. His brother Michael won the competition.

Flying Dog is owned by the Flying Dog Ownership Group of Denver.
