EPA Inspects Va. Dairy Farms As Part Of Bay Cleanup

HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) -- Federal regulators have inspected seven dairy farms in the Shenandoah Valley as part of a restoration of the Chesapeake Bay.

Environmental Protection Agency spokesman David Sternberg tells the Daily News-Record that the farms were inspected earlier this month. He says the results will be shared with the state to determine how to address any concerns.

The farms weren't identified.

Gary Flory with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality says the inspections focused on small dairy operations.

The EPA's "pollution diet" for the Chesapeake Bay will require the six states in the bay watershed and the District of Columbia to enact stringent reductions of sediment and pollution such as fertilizers that flow into the bay.
