Man Surrenders After Standoff In Md.; Woman Shot

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A man has been taken into custody following a seven-hour standoff in western Maryland.

Washington County Sheriff Douglas Mullendore says the man surrendered to police around 10 p.m. Friday, several hours after a woman inside the home was shot in the head. She was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. Mullendore says the woman was alive as of late Friday night.

It was not clear what led to the shooting, though Mullendore says the two were once involved in a romantic relationship.

The name of the man taken into custody was not immediately released. He was being held at the Washington County Detention Center.
