Mikulski To Chair Metro Meeting To Discuss Safety

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski will chair a meeting of the national capital region congressional delegation with the management of Washington's Metro transit system.

The meeting is set for Wednesday in Washington, where Maryland and Virginia members of Congress will meet to discuss Metro's safety and operational reliability.

Metro CEO and general manager Richard Sarles will take part, along with chief safety officer James Dougherty. Sarles and Dougherty will present the status of Metro's implementation of Federal Transit Administration and National Transportation Safety Board recommendations for safety improvements.

Next week marks the second anniversary of the deadliest accident in the history of the Metro, when one train plowed into a stopped train. Nine people died and more than 70 were injured.
