Md. Fly Ash Dump Site Fined
GAMBRILLS, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland Department of the Environment says the operator of an Anne Arundel County fly ash dump site paid a $2,500 fine for placing ash outside the dump's original footprint.
The Department of the Environment said Wednesday that BBSS, Inc. was fined April 20 for the alleged violation of a consent decree.
The department says remediation began immediately after the violation was noted by an inspector, who said the violation was corrected by the following day.
The dump site was the subject of a class action lawsuit by neighbors who claimed it had contaminated groundwater. Fly ash is a byproduct of coal-fired power plants.
