Officials Hope Recent Tragedies Remind People Of Need For Water Safety

BALTIMORE (WJZ) --  Anne Arundel County crews launched a water rescue Monday.  A man is missing after being tossed out of a boat on the Magothy River.  This came just hours after a child drowned at Sandy Point State Park.

Denise Koch has more.

A viewer captured video of a boat running in circles around the Magothy River.  Robert Kane, a 25-year-old man, and a woman were on the boat when the woman and man fell in the water.  That's when bystanders called 911.

"She was rescued by a passing boater and she was uninjured and refused medical treatment.  The gentleman who was operating the boat is still missing and we are still conducting active search operations in the area," said Captain James Rostek, Anne Arundel County Fire Department.

Rescue crews used sonar to search the water but that search has been called off and will resume Tuesday.

This is the second accident in Maryland waters in a matter of hours.  A little boy drowned Monday morning at Sandy Point State Park.  He disappeared while swimming in about four feet of water.

Randy Watts said his dad rushed in, part of a human chain that formed to search this part of the Chesapeake Bay.

"My dad felt the boy on his leg so he picked him up and said, `Here he is, here he is,'" Watts said.

The boy was rushed to the hospital where he later died.

"It was very scary.  I couldn't imagine if that was one of my siblings or anything," said Nasheau Williams.

"They should have their vests on.  They should be proactive and stay with their kids at all times, keep an eye on them," said Deaundra Cloyd.

In the case of the missing boater, police don't know if he was wearing a life jacket.
