Man Sentenced To 60 Years In Infant's Killing

WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) -- A Sykesville man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend's 8-month-old daughter.

Donald Ray Pevia Jr., 30, was convicted in April of second-degree murder and numerous other offenses. At sentencing Tuesday, Carroll County Circuit Judge J. Barry Hughes said this was the worst case of child abuse he'd seen in 27 years in law.

Eight-month-old Ky'leigh Rogers was taken to Carroll Hospital Center on March 3, 2009 with apparent breathing trouble and died later that day. Her death was ruled a homicide, caused by bleeding from numerous internal injuries caused by blunt force trauma.

Pevia had been one of the infant's main caregivers in the weeks before her death.
