Art Funds Awarded To Baltimore And Other Cities

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A burgeoning arts and entertainment district in Baltimore is the focus of a new grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, along with public-private partnerships in New Orleans and elsewhere.

The endowment is announcing its inaugural round of "Our Town" grants totaling $6.5 million for sites in 34 states. The goal of the federal grants is to strengthen the arts through projects that also improve neighborhoods and cities.

In Baltimore, the Maryland Institute College of Art won a $150,000 grant to expand arts programming and use of public spaces in the city's Station North district. The project will lead to a symposium on the impacts of such arts districts nationwide.

Other grants will support arts districts in Kansas City, Mo., Charleston, S.C., New Orleans and elsewhere.
