Severstal Seeks More Time To Respond To Suit

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The former owner of the Sparrows Point steel mill is asking a federal judge for two more weeks to respond to a suit filed by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

The foundation says the plant continues to pollute the bay and is seeking emergency action. Current owner Severstal Sparrows Point LLC asked the judge to dismiss the suit earlier this year and he ruled last week that the company is not liable for pollution that occurred before Bethlehem Steel's 2003 bankruptcy sale. However, he ruled Severstal may be required to study offshore pollution in the area. After the ruling, Severstal asked the judge to move the July 19 deadline for its response to Aug. 2.

Severstal announced earlier this year that it had sold the plant to the Renco Group Inc.
