Mount Rainier Police Officer Indicted For Attempted Murder And Sexual Assault

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- A Prince George's County judge has ordered a Mount Rainier police officer indicted on attempted murder and sex-offense charges to be held without bond.

Prosecutors accuse Gene Gillette, 27, of shooting a man in his Capitol Heights home after assaulting him, touching his genitals and trying to sexually assault him on July 2. They say Gillette was off-duty when he met the 20-year-old man. Prosecutors say Gillette told the man that he was making a pornographic movie and needed a male actor.

Gillette's defense attorney said in court Wednesday that whatever happened inside the home was consensual and that Gillette fired his gun in self defense. Gillette was indicted earlier this week by a county grand jury on 12 counts, including attempted murder, attempted sex offense and false imprisonment.
