Frederick Comic Book Store Makes History

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- Being on the cover of a Spider-Man comic book has thrust a local store into comic book history.

Beyond Comics, 5632 Buckeystown Pike in Frederick, was recently featured on the cover of Amazing Spider-Man No. 666, becoming the first comic book store bestowed with the privilege, store owner Jon Cohen said.

Released July 27, the comic showcases Spider-Man on a mission to save comic book stores across the country as a show of appreciation for these institutions helping him become so famous over the years, Cohen said.

"Never before has Marvel Comics allowed comic book stores the opportunity to personalize the cover of a comic book," Cohen said. "Our store is one of a few stores selected. Our name is prominently featured on the cover. We thought it was pretty neat."

Beyond Comics has been inundated with calls for copies, but Cohen may not be able to fill the orders. His two stores in Gaithersburg and Frederick received only 1,000 copies.

"We have sold copies online around the world including in Greece, Italy, the Netherlands and Bulgaria," Cohen said.

Beyond Comics applied for the honor, Cohen said.

"We wanted to make sure that Beyond Comics didn't miss this opportunity to become part of comic book history and provide customers and fans the opportunity to own a collectible comic that commemorates a local business," Cohen said.

In addition, the new cover "is marketing for Marvel, pure and simple," Cohen said. "It's the launch of a new story arc."

Beyond Comics has been in business since 1996, offering a wide selection of comic books and related merchandise. The
4,000-square-foot Frederick store opened six years ago.

"We take great pride in carrying the most amazing selection of statues, action figures, toys, T-shirts and random comic
merchandise to be found anywhere," Cohen said.
