Rawlings-Blake Campaigns Door-To-Door

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- It was just 18 months ago that Stephanie Rawlings-Blake became mayor of Baltimore.  Now she is trying to hold on to her job.  Mike Schuh spent time with her as she went door-to-door asking for votes.

Though she is the mayor, this is the first time she's run for the job.

"I like what Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is doing and I want to see that continue," said volunteer Alex Gaines.

When Dixon imploded, Rawlings-Blake was bumped up from council president.  She may not have much experience going door to door on her own behalf, but her dad is legendary political giant Pete Rawlings.  She saw a lot of sidewalks with him.

"I've been doing this since I was eight or nine years old.  It's election time; you gotta go out and knock on doors.  I love it," said Rawlings-Blake.

In the campaign so far, her opponents have come out swinging.  They've said that she doesn't have a big vision and is cold and ineffectual.

"I disagree wholeheartedly," she said.  "I am who I am.  They might not be fond of my personality but I have a sincere heart.  I work every day for the city and people that I love.  I'm not everybody's cup of tea but I work hard every day and certainly don't expect my opponents to be my biggest fans."

The primary is on September 13.

WJZ contacted the other leading candidates to include them in this story but they did not respond in time for this report.
