Motorcyclists Ride Across Maryland Saturday To Remember 9/11

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A ride to remember.  That's the goal for thousands of motorcyclists riding across Maryland and headed to New York to mark the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

But as Gigi Barnett reports, the ride has caused some major traffic tie-ups.

The license tags on these motorcycles come from all over.

"Four of us are from Frederick, one from Colesville, one from Minnesota," said 9/11 rider Dean Hashmall.

The noise is deafening.  With a full police escort, the final destination for thousands of bikers is Ground Zero, New York.

"I wanted to ride with my friend and show respect," said 9/11 rider Susan McDonald.

America's 9/11 Foundation organized the ride.  The money raised will go to the victims' families.  This trip takes bikers to all three plane crash sites in three days, with many stops in between.

All weekend, the riders caused traffic tie-ups and delays on the state's major highways, but riders say many folks didn't seem to mind.

"They've all been very supportive, waving peace signs [and] 'I love you' signs," said a rider.

In all, there were at least 1,800 riders and the convoy was between 12 and 15 miles long.

The ride wraps up Sunday with a special ceremony at Ground Zero.
