7-Year-Old Girl Helps Save Life Of 9-Month-Old Cousin

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—A West Baltimore family says they experienced a miracle. Their baby girl almost drowned but was saved by her young cousin.

Andrea Fujii has the story.

It's hard to believe 9-month-old Tyjae Powell almost died four days ago and is alive because of her 7-year-old cousin Kynasia Walker.

"I am so proud of her, and I thank God that she found her because she wouldn't have made it," said Tyra Richardson, grandmother.

The family was cleaning and left a bucket of soapy water on the carpet when Powell was playing by herself and fell inside -- head first.

"I yelled and screamed because she was in a bucket of water," said Walker.

"Crying, hollering: 'Tyjae in the bucket. I can't get her. I can't get her,'" Richardson recalled.

Unconscious, Powell was pulled out by her grandmother, and another family member performed CPR.

"Her whole head was inside," Walker said.

Powell was taken to Johns Hopkins and after eight hours went back home with a clean bill of health.

Now the family isn't letting Powell out of their sight and calling Walker a hero.

"I love her so much," Walker said.

Kynasia Walker turned 7 on Thursday and hero was written on her birthday cake.
