2 Dead After Being Hit By Train In Western Md.

ELLERSLIE, Md. (AP) -- Allegany County authorities are investigating the deaths of two people hit by a CSX freight train in the western Maryland town of Ellerslie.

The sheriff's office says Jonathan Soult, 23, and Amanda Smith, 18, were pronounced dead at the scene around 4 a.m. Thursday.

The train crew told investigators they saw the pair on the track as the train approached the Schellsburg Road crossing. Deputies say the crossing lights and crossing gates had been activated and were working properly.

Crew members told deputies that the victims didn't respond when the train blew its whistle.

The bodies have been sent to the state medical examiner in Baltimore to determine the cause of death.
