Bowie State University Holds Memorial For Slain Student

BOWIE, Md. (WJZ) -- A special memorial is held to remember a Bowie State student murdered inside her dorm room. The  university came together Wednesday night to remember 18-year-old Dominique Frazier.

Meghan McCorkell has more.

Ribbons were handed out at the memorial in Bowie State's school colors. The university is coming together in the wake of this tragedy.

It was an emotional tribute to a woman friends say brought happiness wherever she went.

"I couldn't believe that it was you and I prayed over and over again that it wasn't true. But it was, it was you," said Hope Bailey.

"I wake up every morning and I tell myself that she's not gone, that she's simply sleeping," said Joshua McNeil.

Frazier was stabbed to death last Thursday inside her dorm room. Witnesses say her roommate, Alexis Simpson, pulled out a knife as the two fought over an iPod.

Classmates say it's a tragedy for both families.

"We pray for Alexis and we pray that she is held accountable in some way, shape or form," said Leslie Hall.

Wednesday night, the school came together with Frazier's family to heal.

"We should give thanks that she was in our lives, that those of us who knew her had a chance to know her," said University President Mickey Burnim.

As classmates mourn Frazier, we are starting to learn more about the 18-year-old in her own words.

"I write poems and I wanted to give you all some of my insight," Frazier said in a YouTube video.

Frazier posted videos of herself reading her poetry.

"I welcome you into my world because I feel harmed, wings broken and I cannot fly. You will break me down worse than what I am. I know I look forward to this; spare me your bliss," Frazier said in a video.

Words from an aspiring poet who has now been silenced.

Frazier's family did not speak at Wednesday night's memorial. Her grandmother merely told the crowd, "Thank you."

Dominique Frazier will be laid to rest Friday at Assumption Catholic Church in Washington, D.C. Services start at 10 a.m.
