Board Approves Moving MHEC To Baltimore

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A state board has approved moving the Maryland Higher Education Commission from Annapolis to Baltimore.

The Maryland Board of Public Works voted 2-1 to approve the move on Wednesday.

The move to the Maryland State Department of Education will cost about $4.4 million. It's being done to better coordinate efforts between the department and MHEC on federal and state data collection and reporting mandates.

Comptroller Peter Franchot voted against the proposal, because it was done as an emergency mandate. He says that leads to rushing through a procurement without having enough time to review the idea.

Gov. Martin O'Malley and Treasurer Nancy Kopp voted for the move. The Department of General Services says the move will save money by moving MHEC from leased space to state-owned space.
