Charm City Circulator Adds New Route

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Connecting East Baltimore to downtown for free.

Andrea Fujii reports a new bus route is doing just that, and it started Tuesday.

The Charm City Circulator green route has officially launched.  It consists of eight new hybrid electric buses that connect East Baltimore to key downtown destinations like Fells Point and Harbor East free of charge.

"The Charm City Circulator is a great way for commuters to connect to other forms of mass transit in the city, such as MARC trains, light rail and the subway," said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

East Baltimore resident Angela Laprade doesn't have a car, and getting downtown was tough until now.

"Because they have an excellent schedule set up. That's the main thing," said Laprade.

The new route will help Johns Hopkins employees, too, as a stop is right outside.

"It's also going to bring other people from the city to this location to the life sciences concentrations we have here in East Baltimore," said Christopher Shea, East Baltimore Development.

From Sunday to Thursday, the bus will come by every 10 minutes from 6:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m.

The green route will cost $1.3 million a year to operate, and joins two other routes in the city, totaling 26 buses.

"It's free, too. Cost efficient," said Laprade.

The green route has 26 stops. Click here to see a schedule.
