Md. Officer Pleads Guilty To Attempted Murder

MOUNT RAINIER, Md. (AP) -- A Mount Rainier police officer has pleaded guilty to attempted murder, sex and gun charges in connection with an incident at his home in July.

Authorities say Gene Gillette pleaded guilty Monday to attempted murder, attempted sex offense and use of a handgun in the incident, in which he was charged with shooting and injuring a man who tried to flee after a sexual encounter.

Prosecutors have said that Gillette lured the 20-year-old man to his Capitol Heights home, where he made sexual advances toward him. Prosecutors say when the man tried to flee in Gillette's truck, Gillette fired shots at him.

Mount Rainier Police Chief Michael Scott says Gillette, 27, was suspended without pay after being indicted in July.

Gillette is scheduled to be sentenced in mid-January.
