Harris Teeter Comes To Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Development in Locust Point is booming, and at the center of it all is McHenry Row.

Monique Griego has more on what this latest project means for that area.

In just a few years, McHenry Row in Locust Point has risen to life.

"It's come a long way and it's great for the convenience and all the residents," said Kevin Walsh.

Walsh says a Harris Teeter grocery store opening this week is a big part of that convenience.

"We just saw an opportunity to be able to come into an area where we didn't see need being filled.  There's a lot of development, a lot of growth out here," said Catherine Reuhl, Harris Teeter.

Reuhl says right now employees are stocking shelves and doing other final touches, as the chefs prepare all the ready-made food Harris Teeter is famous for.

"We are catering to customers who want to run in here, pick up a hot dinner and take it home to their family," said Reuhl.

Besides the convenience, the store also brought much needed jobs. Harris Teeter employs more than 115 people, 79 percent of which live in Baltimore City.

"I think it's a great thing putting jobs back into this city," said Reuhl.

Abe Rosenthal from 28 Walker Development says the grocery store is only part of what's set to open here within the next few months.

"There's a lot of excitement in the area," he said. "Everything is looking forward to having the services we have here."

In addition to all the new business growth, there's also a new set of high-end apartments.

"It's fantastic. I can't wait for it all to be open," said Walsh.

The store opens up to shoppers on Wednesday, but Tuesday night they're inviting the community to come in and try the food for free.
