9 Planes, Other Vehicles Destroyed In Airport Fire

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- Fire officials say a blaze that swept through a hangar at the Greater Cumberland Regional Airport in Wiley Ford, W.Va., destroyed nine planes, motorcycles and other vehicles. No one was hurt.

The Times-News of Cumberland reports that the fire broke out about 10:50 p.m. Wednesday in a 16-unit hangar. Eight volunteer fire companies responded to the blaze.

Wiley Ford Deputy Chief Sean Malone said when firefighters arrived, there was light smoke and little fire coming from the single-story metal building. He said mostly everything inside was destroyed.

An airport official estimated the damage at more than $2 million.

The fire was confined to the hangar building. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
