New Sign Points Drivers To Long-Gone Town

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A highway sign on the newly opened Intercounty Connector points drivers to a non-existent town.

The Washington Post reports that the sign for Exit 10 points drivers north to Norwood. But Norwood isn't a town even long-time residents know.

There is a Norwood Road in the area, but historians say the only community that went by the name was a farming village in the late 1800s that eventually lost its post office. The town is so obscure that the Montgomery County Historical Society doesn't keep a file on it.

Officials building the Intercounty Connector between Montgomery and Prince George's counties, however, say Norwood is the best designator they could come up with for the relatively rural area. Officials and local political leaders say they haven't gotten any complaints.
