Officials Pleased With Metro Safety Improvements

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Washington's mayor and the governors of Maryland and Virginia say they're pleased with the safety improvements the Metro transit system has made over the past year.

Mayor Vincent Gray hosted a summit Friday afternoon with Gov. Robert McDonnell of Virginia and Gov. Martin O'Malley of Maryland. The three officials signed a memorandum of understanding that calls on them to meet annually to discuss Metro's performance.

Gray says Metro is safer, with fewer injuries and no fatalities in the past year.

The memorandum also calls for transportation officials from all three governments to meet annually to review the composition and performance of the Metro board. The three elected officials say the board appears to be functioning well and did not indicate they want to make any changes.
