Former Prince George's Schools Head Gets New Fraud Case Hearing
GREENBELT, Md. (AP) -- A former Maryland county schools superintendent convicted of steering business to a company where his then-girlfriend worked could get out of prison early after an appeals court reversed three fraud convictions against him.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit on Wednesday threw out half the criminal charges against Andre Hornsby, who was convicted in the scheme in 2008. The court said that while prosecutors proved the former head of the Prince George's County schools system was responsible for a cover up, it is debatable whether he committed a crime before.
Hornsby, who headed the school district from 2003 to 2005, is currently serving six years in prison. He will now be resentenced solely on charges of witness and evidence tampering as well as obstruction.
