Lawyers Ask To Inspect Specimens Of Fetus

ELKTON, Md. (AP) -- Lawyers for a doctor accused of killing a fetus during a late-term abortion are asking to inspect specimens of that fetus.

Lawyers for Dr. Nicola Riley, 46, of Salt Lake City, Utah, made that request on Jan. 27 in a motion filed in Cecil County Circuit Court. Riley and Dr. Steven Brigham, 55, of Voorhees, N.J., have been charged with murder in the death of a fetus.

The Cecil Whig reports that Riley's charges relate to an alleged victim identified as Male Fetus Brewer. Prosecutors allege the fetus was viable.

Stuart O. Simms, one of Riley's lawyers, filed the motion asking a judge to order the State Medical Examiner's Office to allow an expert to inspect any specimens identified as Male Fetus Brewer.
