Md. Welcome Center Near Emmitsburg To Reopen

EMMITSBURG, Md. (AP) -- State and local tourism officials say a welcome center on U.S. Route 15 near Emmitsburg will likely reopen this summer.

The Frederick News-Post reports that Frederick County's delegation to the General Assembly was briefed Friday on plans for the Mason-Dixon Discovery Center near the Maryland-Pennsylvania border.

It is among several welcome centers the state closed in 2009 to cut costs. Maryland tourism chief Hannah Byron says the state is working with the private sector to reopen the Emmitsburg center. She says it will be staffed by state workers and volunteers.

Republican State Sen. David Brinkley says he'd like to see it open before the 150th anniversary of the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg, Pa., in July of next year. Gettysburg is on U.S. Route 15.
