Police: Boy Dead, Mother Wounded In Shooting

HEBRON, Md. (AP) -- Maryland State Police say a 4-year-old boy is dead and his mother is wounded after a shooting at a Wicomico County home.

Police say Shanice Kellam of Hebron was awakened Monday night to find that her son, Jamal Woolford, had a chest wound and that she was also injured. Investigators found a gun in the bed and learned that the boy had previously been seen playing with his father's handgun, which was kept in the bedroom.

Police say Woolford was pronounced dead later that night at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. Authorities say his mother is being treated for injuries that are not thought to be life threatening.

Authorities say they are trying to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
