30 East Baltimore Families Will Soon Move Into Habitat For Humanity Homes

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Thirty Baltimore families will soon be new homeowners.

Monique Griego has more on how Habitat for Humanity and the Housing Authority made it happen.

The shovels are doing more than just breaking ground. They're laying the groundwork for a new life.

Michelle Montgomery and her two kids are one of the 30 families that will soon be moving into a Habitat Humanity home in the Orchard Ridge Development in East Baltimore.

"We have a long and very anxious list of homeowners who are ready to move in here," said Mike Brennan, Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat for Humanity Chesapeake is teaming up with the city's housing authority to rehab the homes and help the future owners get the financial help they need.

"This was not easy. I'm a single parent, and I'm doing it on my own, but I was determined. I was motivated.  And I was going to get it done," Montgomery said.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake says these homes are an example of her plan to move blight out of the city.

"This project is proof that for every block in this city we can bring it back to life," the mayor said.

However, Montgomery feels a new home does more than just revive a neighborhood.

"Not only am I gaining a new home, I gained an excellent family and new friends," she said. "They have been a great support system to me."

Once construction on the new homes is complete, the families will be given the new keys to move in.
