Maryland Students Host Benefit For Classmate

IJAMSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Students at a western Maryland high school are raising money to help cover medical costs for a classmate whose left leg was amputated after he was hospitalized with a staph infection.

Urbana High School students, in affiliation with the Southern Frederick County Rotary Club, are hosting a 5K race May 20 to benefit sophomore Chris Bedard.

The run will take place at McKeever Family Farm in Ijamsville.

Bedard was hospitalized late last year and his left leg was amputated below the knee. He only recently returned home. Fellow students say medical costs related to his care and recovery have been steep.
