Fire Damages Vacant Maryland State Hospital

MARRIOTTSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Another blaze has damaged a former state hospital that Carroll County officials have asked state lawmakers to demolish.

The latest fire at the abandoned Henryton State Hospital in the Marriottsville area of Carroll County took about 50 firefighters two hours to battle Saturday.

Fire officials say the roof was destroyed and the third floor was damaged, but no injuries were reported.

Brett Pearce, deputy chief of the Sykesville Fire Department, told The Baltimore Sun that at least 12 suspicious fires have damaged the former tuberculosis ward and psychiatric hospital in the past decade.

Pearce says county officials have urged state lawmakers to demolish the building, but funds to do that were stripped out of the budget during this year's General Assembly session.
