Baltimore Man Shot To Death As His Teenage Daughter Witnesses Attack

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- A home invasion escalated to murder in the Waverly area of Baltimore.

Alex DeMetrick reports a man was shot to death and his teenage daughter was traumatized in the attack.

Detectives were still working the crime scene Thursday afternoon in the 3300-block of Westerwald Avenue in Waverly. But it started Wednesday night just before 9 p.m. with a call for help after gunshots were heard.

Police found Tavon Frederick, 35, dead with multiple gunshot wounds to the head. His distraught teenage daughter was also there.

"Unfortunately, the victim's daughter was present in the location and called 911," Sgt. Anthony Smith of the Baltimore City Police Department said.

Police say it began at the back of the home.

"There were several individuals that broke into the rear of the home. There were signs of a struggle inside the home," Smith said.

According to WJZ's media partner, The Baltimore Sun, that struggle went from room to room, leaving furniture smashed.

There are only a dozen homes on this block. The few people who answered their doors declined to answer questions.

Off camera, one neighbor did tell WJZ that people are afraid to speak because of an active drug trade in the area. As to whether drugs are involved in the murder:

"We don't have a motive at this time," Smith said.

But according to court records, Frederick has had drug convictions in the past, and he might have known his attackers.

"It does not appear to be a random attack," Smith said.

Whether that buys peace of mind in this neighborhood is another matter.

The murder victim's daughter was not injured in the attack. Suspects remain unknown and at large.
