50 Swimmers To Attempt 7.5-Mile Potomac Crossing

SCOTLAND, Md. (AP) -- Swimmers will be crossing the Potomac this weekend to raise money and environmental awareness about the river.

Fifty swimmers have signed up for the 7.5 mile swim this Saturday, which is the 20th for the annual event. The swimmers will be taken by boat from Point Lookout State Park in Maryland to Hull Neck, Va. They will then swim back with each swimmer accompanied by a kayaker.

The Potomac Riverkeeper group says swimmers collected more than $18,000 in pledges for last year's event.

Registration for the event is closed, but the public is invited to attend and cheer the swimmers as they finish.
