Teen Struck And Killed By Train In Riverdale Area

BOWIE, Md. (AP) -- Prince George's County police say a Bowie teenager wearing headphones has been struck and killed by a train in the Riverdale area.

Cpl. Clinton Copeland says Mary C. Gaffney, 17, apparently did not notice an oncoming CSX freight train while walking on the tracks in the 6100-block of Lafayette Avenue late Wednesday. Copeland says the train hit the teen and she was pronounced dead at a hospital early Thursday.

Copeland says it remains unclear why she was on the tracks. He says investigators believe the crash was accidental.
