BALTIMORE  (WJZ) — Congratulations to Miss Maryland.

Nana Meriwether, 27, was the first runner-up in Sunday night’s Miss USA pageant.

The pageant was held at the Planet Hollywood casino on the Las Vegas Strip and had three competitions: swimsuit, evening gowns and interview question.

Meriweather is from Potomac, Md.  She played volleyball at Duke and the University of California, Los Angeles. She is currently applying to medical schools.

Meriwether attended Sidwell Friends School, the same school President Obama’s daughters attend. She co-founded a nonprofit, The Meriwether Foundation, that operates in five countries in southern Africa.

Olivia Culpo, 20, of Rhode Island has been crowned Miss USA 2012.

Culpo will represent the United States at the 61st Miss Universe pageant.
