Md. Man Charged With D.C. Building Crash Held

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Maryland man who drove a stolen Jeep into a downtown Washington office has made his first court appearance.

Charles Ball of New Market, Md., appeared in D.C. Superior Court Monday and was ordered held ahead of a hearing scheduled for June 28. According to court papers the 32-year-old told officers on the scene of Friday night's incident that his family was in danger and the Frederick Police Department was not helping. The papers said Ball crashed the Jeep in the hopes that the FBI would talk to him.

Ball is accused of driving through a full-length, plate-glass window. A police report says he was trying to use a lighter when police arrived on scene and that the vehicle's front seat was wet with a liquid that smelled like gasoline.
