Police: Md. Man Shot By Police Had Stolen Handgun

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The Washington County Sheriff's Office says a Myersville man who was shot and critically wounded by police had threatened them with a stolen handgun.

The agency released new details Tuesday of its investigation into the shooting Sunday of James Jardina.

Investigators say they found a note in Jardina's truck advising his wife about his funeral wishes and financial matters.

Police say Jardina, 45, pointed a stolen 9mm handgun at a sheriff's deputy and a Maryland Department of Natural Resources police officer early Sunday morning at a Park-and-Ride lot on Route 66 near Interstate 70.

Investigators say the officers responded with a total of 33 shots. They say four to five of them hit Jardina in the torso and hip.

Jardina remains hospitalized in critical condition.
