Marinas Contest Deep Creek Boat Rental Rule

OAKLAND, Md. (AP) -- Two marina operators at Deep Creek Lake are asking a court to reverse the Garrett County Commissioners' decision to let a lakeside ice cream shop offer competing boat rentals.

The Cumberland Times-News reports that the owners of Bill's Marine Service and Silver Tree Marine have filed a petition for judicial review of the board's actions.

The commissioners voted 2-1 in June to allow boat rentals at places other than marinas. They then issued a boat rental permit to the Lakeside Creamery. The shop plans to offer 12 personal watercraft and four pontoon boats.

The marinas say they've been adversely affected by the decision.

They say expanded rentals will increase boat traffic on the lake and cause safety issues and parking problems.
