Md. Helping Local Police Monitor Sex Offenders

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Governor's Office of Crime Control & Prevention is awarding nearly $730,000 to help local police agencies monitor sex offenders.

The agency announced the grants Wednesday to all 23 counties and Baltimore city. Baltimore city got about a quarter of the funds.

The agency says Maryland's Sex Offender Registry contains nearly 800 names. Those guilty of the most serious offenses are required to re-register every three months for life.

Those convicted of less serious offenses must register at least annually for up to 25 years, depending on the severity of their crimes.
