Lien Filed Against Company In D.C. Mayor Probe
WASHINGTON (AP) -- District of Columbia tax collectors have filed a lien against a company that's part of a federal campaign finance investigation involving Mayor Vincent Gray.
The Washington Times reports that Belle International Inc. owes the district government more than $100,000 in corporate franchise taxes, interest and penalties. The lien was filed in June.
The company's owner, Eugenia "Jeanne" Clarke Harris, pleaded guilty in July to facilitating a $650,000 "shadow campaign" to help Gray get elected. She admitted that she used Belle International to funnel off-the-books contributions to Gray from a district businessman.
The tax lien covers the 2010 tax year. It was filed because of $51,000 in unpaid corporate franchise taxes. With interest and penalties, the bill is about $104,000.
