French Company Appeals Maryland Nuclear Reactor Rejection
BALTIMORE (AP) -- A French company is appealing U.S. regulators' rejection of its bid to build a third reactor at the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant in Lusby near the Chesapeake Bay.
The Baltimore Sun reports that UniStar Nuclear Energy asked the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Monday to overturn the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board's decision.
The board ruled Aug. 30 that UniStar was ineligible for a reactor operating license because federal law bars foreign ownership of a nuclear plant.
The board gave UniStar 60 days to find a U.S. partner. UniStar's lawyers say it's not clear what level of foreign investment is acceptable under the law. They are asking the NRC for clear guidance on measures that can be taken to offset or negate foreign ownership and financing.
