Towson High School Mourns Death Of Freshman Found Unresponsive At The Bottom Of A Pool

TOWSON, Md. (WJZ)-- A high school community is grieving following the sudden death of a swimmer at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. There are questions surrounding the mysterious drowning death of the 14-year-old at the Meadowbrook Aquatic Center.

Christie Ileto spoke with classmates of Louis Lowenthal.

Lowenthal's classmates say he was a star swimmer and a stellar student and a good person, and that they still can't understand why his life was tragically cut short.

The news of Lowenthal's death hit like a bombshell at Towson High School.

"It's really shocking," said Taylor Cernak.

A Towson community is searching for answers as to why he never resurfaced during a Sunday swim practice.

"I'm actually getting a little teary-eyed talking about it," said freshman classmate Akil Richardson.

There are few details surrounding the Sunday incident, but emergency responders say Lowenthal was found at the bottom of the pool.

The swim center said that someone saw Lowenthal go into the pool, but left the area. When they returned, Lowenthal was underwater and unresponsive.

The attorney for Lowenthal's swim club, the North Baltimore Aquatic club says: "The organization sends its thoughts and prayers to the family."

Richardson said it's hard not knowing Lowenthal won't be in class come Monday.

"It's difficult knowing he just died," he said.

"It sucks because he was only like 14 and a freshman, and he didn't even survive his first year of high school," said Towson High student Dillon Seyler.

No homecoming, prom and no high school diploma for a student who excelled in his classes. Just a life cut short, a community stunned and saddened, and classmates trying to understand why.

The hospital says there are no update as of now.

A memorial service for Lowenthal is planned for 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6 at Goucher College.

The autopsy is incomplete at this time. It is still unclear what caused him to drown.
